Section 3: Economics

Economics is not always the only basis for selecting structure type. Hydraulics and/or gradeline constraints may call for extra-thin superstructures. Structures that can be constructed rapidly might be justified if detour time can be minimized. Environmental considerations could justify the extra cost of especially aesthetic structures.

Texas has long been favored with low bridge costs compared to the national average. This has been attributed to consistency of details, good competition among the contractors, and reasonable labor costs.

Many things must be considered in planning a highway project. The planners should continue to emphasize economy.
