Section 3: Fatality Memorial Markers and Signs
Anchor: #i1002712Introduction
Memorial markers (signs) can be placed on state highways to honor a family member or a peace officer if certain criteria are met.
Memorial Markers for Traffic-Related Fatalities. Organizations and relatives of persons killed in any traffic-related crashes may install commemorative markers (such as crosses) beside the road at the location of the crash. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) allows such markers, provided the district approves the location of the marker. See Chapter 3, Section 10 of the Maintenance Division’s Use of Right of Way by Others Manual for guidelines for these markers. This program is managed by the Maintenance Division (MNT).
Memorial Sign Program for Victims of Impaired Driving and Motorcycle Crashes. This special sign program allows family or friends of victims of motorcycle or impaired driving crashes to purchase a sign to be placed near the site of the crash. Each Memorial Sign, bearing the name(s) of the victim(s), serves to commemorate loved ones while raising awareness of these serious issues. See Chapter 3, Section 10 of the Use of Right of Way by Others Manual for guidelines for these markers. This program is managed by the Traffic Operations Division (TRF).
