Section 4: Marker Coordinates — Key Points to Know
Anchor: #i1010225Marker Coordinates Defined
Marker Coordinates indicate the geophysical point of the reference marker on the route, located by latitude, longitude, and elevation. Add or update coordinates as point data, up to eight coordinates in one transaction.

TPP is the Office of Primary Responsibility (OPR) for adding and updating reference marker coordinates.

Elevation—The vertical distance of a point above or below some arbitrarily assumed level surface or datum; the point of known height above mean sea level measured in feet.
Latitude—Angular distance north from the earth's equator to a given point on the earth, measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds.
Longitude—Angular distance west from the Greenwich Meridian to a point on the earth; measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds.

Action |
Input |
---|---|---|
1 |
(For instructions to log onto the system, click this link) From the TPP Database Maintenance Menu, select Update-Code 52E. Result: The Marker Coordinate Data screen appears |
Only one set of coordinate data resides at each reference marker |
2 |
Input Location Key fields |
|
3 |
Input remaining fields and press <F2>. Result: The system updates TRM with the new marker coordinates and displays the message "Transaction completed successfully” |

Follow these input instructions to update reference marker coordinates:
Step |
Action |
Input |
---|---|---|
1 |
(For instructions to log onto the system, click this link) From the TPP Database Maintenance Menu, select Update-Code 53E. Result: The Marker Coordinate Data screen displays with a prompt message requesting the updated coordinate’s location |
Only one set of coordinate data resides at each reference marker |
2 |
Input Location Key fields and press <E>. Result: The record(s) as stored in TRM display. A message requests the updated marker coordinates |
|
3 |
Input update fields and press <F2>. Result: The system updates the attribute, displays a verification message and the original request for the coordinate’s current record to update, plus any required fields |

Geographic Information System
The TRM Key is the link for spatial and linear data that support the Geographic Information System (GIS). TRM allows TPP analysts to extract data from the database and send to users electronically to create GIS maps, using Arcview software. For data requests, contact the TPP District Data Support Branch for a TRM User Analyst.
For issues or questions about GIS with respect to TRM, contact TPP's Data Analysis, Mapping & Reporting Branch.
If a more general support is desired for GIS, contact the Technology Services Division ( TSD).

TSD has also developed standards for Global Positioning System (GPS) use on TxDOT Projects and provides training classes for these standards. Classes include:
- GPS Data Standards
- GPS Mapping and Accuracy Standards
- Metadata
- Data Dictionaries.
Classes include actual field exercises with equipment. Please route any questions concerning GPS data collection to the Engineering Technology Services Branch (ETS) at TSD.
For issues or questions about GPS with respect to TRM, contact the Data Analysis, Mapping & Reporting Branch at TPP.
